UPDATE: Union Grove ISD placed Coach Steve Mulkey on administrative leave, and he will not be teaching during the Fall semester. The school board will meet tonight to determine its next steps. I am informed that the Texas Education Agency will likely appoint an independent hearing examiner to investigate the claims against Mulkey.
The three publicly-identified victims already intend to testify, as does one more. Others are deciding when/whether to step forward. Finally, I understand that Coach Mulkey has a lot of supporters. So did Jerry Sandusky. I am not asking people on either side to make a decision at this point — quite the contrary, in fact — but please keep an open mind until you have heard all the evidence.
If you want to attack me, go for it. But if you start attacking the victims, you’ll get blocked.
CORRECTION: Coach Mulkey was placed on administrative leave “pending further notice.” That decision can be made by the superintendent without school board approval. It is not clear when / whether he will return to the school. And TEA will not appoint a hearing examiner unless/until the board takes action.
Where are you getting your information because the school board isn’t meeting until tonight-that’s what you said so how do you know that he’s not teaching in the fall? Just curious.

Sounds like there are multiple people making these claims. (Smoke/Fire?) I find it interesting that there are posters on here (mostly men) who are denying those claims so adamantly. “He never touched me inappropriately so he couldn’t have ever touched any of the girls.” Maybe schools should have classes called “Practical logic, and drawing unconnected conclusions.”
ugh…this is the first I’ve heard of this. Even these rumors can ruin his career. I will be praying for truth and wisdom for tonight’s meeting.
Have you ever heard of the phrase innocent until proven guilty? By taking the claims and stating them as facts in your inquiry, you are defaming the character of a man that has been an outstanding coach, teacher, mentor, husband, as well as a great father to his children. Steve Mulkey is the type of man that would take in a kid and treat them as well as his own. He has positively impacted thousands of lives of children who he has come in contact with over the years. He has also been a fantastic mentor to young coaches as well.
Whether the claims against him are true or false is yet to be determined. However, you cannot state anything publicly as a fact until the man has had a fair trial and had a chance to defend himself. Any other rumors and talk is hearsay.

I feel sad for the women being chastised for just now going public. It is not my place to sit as judge and jury. I think everyone has experienced unpleasant emotions that we fool ourselves into thinking that the experience of that event has been erased. Then some seemingly benign event triggers the memory as if it were only yesterday. I feel that way about having lost my Mom 11 years ago; I think I have come to terms with it then some trigger brings all those emotions back just as painful as the day it happened In this case it appears as though the mere hiring of Coach Mulkey was that trigger. I am not taking sides so please, no attacks. I just want to point out the psychology behind the delayed “public outing”.
So what you are saying in the past what he has done to innocent victims such as I is ok and doesn’t matter. What he did not only to me but to countless other girls is ok also and deserves and award for it. Look at Sandusky he had many supporters that thought he was the best man that walked on this earth. Watching that trial saddened me very deeply because I could relate to his victims. Maybe he was a good coach at other schools, still doesn’t ok him for what he did to us. These are the messages that y’all are putting out there. I know what I know that happened to me and I was only an 8th grader. I witnessed what he did to so many other girls. Yes some of the girls did try and report it and was told to go back to our class rooms and didn’t want to hear of it. You have the right to your freedom of speech just as I do. What if it was your daughter and it happened 30 years ago and your daughter was threatened by that coach and had you so scared to say anything, but 30 years later when she is able to talk about it. What would you tell your daughter? Oh well get over it he’s won these awards?
If true, these actions are terrible and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law within the statute of limitations in my opinion. Nowhere in my post did I ever say these actions were ok and didn’t matter. It is impossible for me to condone such behaviors.
With that being said, it is also impossible for me to condone an individual creating a website to publicly assassinate a man’s character without a rightful trial in front of a judge and a jury of their peers.
To answer your question what I would tell my daughter? Theoretically, I would tell her to get her facts and witnesses together and take them to a judge to go through the legal process. The public realm is not the place to take a case that is so sensitive in nature for everyone involved.

it does not matter how long it took for these women to come forward, but they did and they should be proud of that, because this happened before means it it probably still happening.

So if your daughter did that and exhausted all of her options and everything still was swept under the rug. By the time you do this you feel alone. Until one day you have a baby girl that is going to the same school that they are hiring that same person back and your daughter is in the same grade that it happened to you, what would you do at that point. If you were any kind of dad you would do whatever it took to take care of your daughter.
