I believe in the rule of law and the concept of “innocent until proven guilty”. While I believe we have one of the better criminal justice systems on the face of the planet, it is by no means perfect. Cases of child sexual abuse shine a light on the core defects in a system much better suited to deal with car theft, armed robbery, and murder.
No one that watches the news should any longer be surprised that victims of child abuse stay silent over a long period of time, even decades, and then risk having more blame heaped on them for having done so. We have seen this time after time in multiple cases where, in most cases, it takes a specific trigger for victims to finally come forward. The absolute, lasting power of a child molester over his victim(s) is completely unparalleled.
While we should never be too quick to judge, we should also not be too quick to condemn victims of the crime. In this case, if there was a crime committed, the trigger appears to at least be partially due to maternal instincts. It’s hard to argue against the instincts of a mother, and if you do so, you’re surely bound to lose. They sort of supersede the Magna Carta.
Ty is admittedly a rare person with the spine necessary to do something like this. Our country was founded by people with a rebellious streak and we still need a few, especially in the legal profession. This is a case where a very public spotlight absolutely should be shone on the case, since it might otherwise go ignored in the criminal justice system due to a flawed statute of limitations, or by the school board lacking a prosecution.
If it prevents a single, solitary case of child sexual abuse from ever happening again, it will be worth going to extraordinary means to prevent that. If Mulkey is completely innocent and is able to answer 3 (or more) accusers and clear his name, then it would seem to me like he would welcome that opportunity.
We shall see.
